You would mostly be limited to cars/control units older than 2006 or so and the SCN coding issues are mostly for later cars. Can you give an example where the old version would do version coding that a relatively fresh copy could not do via normal or developer menus? I am aware of certain off-line tasks that need an older DAS copy but these are not SCN related issues.
